Malawi is signatory to the African Charter, which talks about citizens having access to mineral rights and to the revenues that come from minerals. Once communities have access to revenues from the mining sector they are able to use those revenues to develop themselves.
The government can also use that money to build school, and support other social programs. It is very important for a country to be self-sufficient and economically independent. Why ask for money from donors when we have enough money, enough resources, to support ourselves?
We need to make sure this money is properly accounted for, properly utilised, and that this money is put to good use so that the people are able to benefit from it.
I see myself as a messenger for the communities; I present their voice to officials when the communities don’t have access to them. That meter keeps me running.
