Parliamentarians

What is PWYP’s ask?

Publish What You Pay (PWYP) calls on parliamentarians to represent citizen preferences and oversee the extractive revenues that flow to the state and how effectively these funds are publicly spent.

Why does PWYP focus on parliamentarians?

Parliamentarians, or legislatures, have critical government and budget oversight responsibilities. They are a vital link between extractive revenues that flow to the state and the allocation and use of these funds for the public benefit.

With the correct tools and knowledge, legislators are better able to represent citizen preferences and oversee the executive’s decisions regarding the exploitation of natural resources and the collection and use of revenues. Reform-minded legislators can be instrumental in turning civil society concerns into constructive solutions.

PWYP’s work with parliamentarians

Engaging with parliamentarians is a relatively new focus of advocacy and campaigning for most PWYP members. Notable work to date includes a capacity building project run by the Revenue Watch Institute focusing on equipping legislators with the baseline knowledge, intellectual resources, and training so that they can more effectively oversee the executive’s management of the extractive sector.
