PWYP Membership Survey

Dear Publish What You Pay members,

As a campaign and a coalition Publish What You Pay (PWYP) has grown massively since it was launched in 2002. There are currently hundreds of organisations that have signed up to PWYP either at the international level or are affiliated through national coalitions. PWYP members include human rights, environmental, anti-corruption, access to information, and faith-based groups, to name a few, which share the conviction that transparency in the extractive industries is essential for citizens to make informed decisions about their country’s natural resource wealth.

We feel it is time to take stock of our burgeoning membership in order to understand the true scale and composition of the members who have made PWYP the internationally-recognised campaign that it is today. This will allow us to think about our future direction as a movement, coordinate amongst ourselves, share experiences, and proactively think about the challenges that lie ahead, as well as the successes that have worked for our partners around the world and how the broader network can capitalise upon these gains. We also know that the level of engagement and priority attached to the PWYP campaign varies among our different members, and may have changed over time, so we would like to have a snapshot of where you feel you fit in to the campaign.

We hope that clear and accurate information about the size and composition of the PWYP coalition will serve all our members. As the scale and complexity of the coalition grows we need to ensure our members are able to access the most up-to-date information whether in terms of contacting potential partners or in accessing information about a particular issue. This survey will also play a part in improving the effectiveness and structure of the coalition.

Further, we want to be more systematic in letting the coalition know when new members come on board. Our new website www.publishwhatyoupay.org allows us to feature national coalitions and their activities in an exciting and informative way. The more information we receive from you, the more useful the website will become.

Your participation in this survey will greatly help us respond to the needs of the coalition and your input is truly appreciated. Please try to respond as fully as possible to each question – we encourage you to make comments where this is provided for. Understanding you are all busy, we would note more information regarding your needs will better help us to identify best the methods of offering support. In case of technical difficulties, or if you would like to provide feedback over the phone, please contact jwilliams@publishwhatyoupay.org to arrange a 20 minute phone conversation.

The results of the survey will be published online, in the next edition of our newsletter and presented at the PWYP International Conference in Montreal on 16-18 November 2009.

The deadline for completing this survey is Friday 16 October 2009.

Please note, those that do not respond to this survey may be removed from the PWYP membership list, website and email distribution lists. This is necessary to ensure that we are honing in on those actively working on the platform, so we can best identify points of knowledge and offer a means of dialogue between active groups. You may re-register later, following the new registration procedures that will be outlined on the PWYP website.

Only one person per organisation needs to complete the survey – however this person should be aware of everyone within their organisation working on Publish What You Pay issues.

Once you have completed the survey please remember to click the ‘submit’ button.
