Rotab/PWYP Niger member Wada Maman was provisionally released yesterday evening but still faces charges of “participation in an unauthorized demonstration”, “damage to public buildings” and “destruction of private property”. Maman was arrested on 22 August by the Republican Guard in Niamey following a series of arrests of civil society activists in the wake of the deteriorating human rights and political situation in Niger.

While welcoming the news of Maman’s release, PWYP is concerned that the Nigerien government’s restrictions on civil society continue to leave many individuals and organisations across the country vulnerable to official harassment and persecution.

Marou Amadou, another member of Rotab/PWYP Niger, is currently being held in the Koutoukalé high security prison. He was recently charged with “managing an illegal organisation” and is awaiting trial.

PWYP will continue to monitor developments in the country and work with its international partners to safeguard the rights and security of members in Niger. The EITI Rapid Response Committee is also monitoring the situation closely and will continue to receive updates from PWYP.

Wada Maman, un membre du Rotab/PCQVP Niger, a été placé en liberté provisoire hier soir à Niamey, mais il reste passible de poursuites judiciaires pour “destruction d‘édifices et de monuments publics”, “participation à la destruction d’un véhicule appartenant à autrui”, et “participation à une manifestation interdite”.

M. Maman avait été arrêté le 22 août dernier par la Garde républicaine, suite à une vague d’arrestations de militants de la société civile consécutive à la dégradation de la situation des droits de l’homme et du climat politique dans le pays.

Bien qu’elle salue cette libération, la coalition PCQVP s’inquiète de ce que les restrictions imposées par le gouvernement nigérien à la société civile rendent de nombreux individus et organisations vulnérables au harcèlement et aux persécutions.

Marou Amadou, un autre membre du Rotab/PCQVP Niger, est actuellement incarcéré à la prison de haute sécurité de Koutoukalé. Il a récemment été inculpé pour “administration d’une organisation non autorisée” et est en attente de jugement.

PCQVP continuera de suivre attentivement la situation dans le pays et de travailler avec ses partenaires internationaux pour garantir la sécurité et le respect des droits de ses membres au Niger. Le Comité de Réponse Rapide de l’ITIE suit également de près les événements au Niger et PCQVP le tiendra dûment informé de l‘évolution de la situation.
