Afghanistan’s natural resources include natural gas, oil, coal, petroleum, copper, chromite, talc, barites and sulphur. According to a study by USGS initiated in 2006, Afghanistan has $1 US trillion in untapped mineral deposits, giving it the potential to become one of the world’s most important mining centres.

Recent activities

12 November 2021 - Afghanistan Integrity Watch posted a petition to Avaaz, for people to call on the Afghan Council of Ministers to send the draft access to information law to parliament.

15 October 2021 - The Afghan government published in full the 2011 Amu Darya oil contract and more than 200 small mine contracts. You can read PWYP’s press release about this here.

29 September 2021 - Afghan civil society, including Afghanistan Integrity Watch, and media organizations demanded that the Ministry of Justice immediately send the draft access to information law to the cabinet for approval.

September 2012 - Afganistan Integrity Watch’s research team developed a baseline survey for the Hajigak mine.
