Launched in 2006, the PWYP Niger coalition has focused on several issues, including the implementation of EITI, budget transparency, capacity building and raising awareness among of mining related issues (e.g use of cyanide in gold mining) in extractive communities. The coalition has also been involved in advocacy at the national level.
Most recently, PWYP Niger led a campaign for the country to get a fair deal, as the government renegotiated its uranium extraction contract with AREVA. In particular, the coalition called on AREVA to respect the country’s mining code. This year, the coalition will continue the campaign and push for the contract with AREVA to be published so that civil society can analyse and monitor the agreement.
