Despite a burgeoning resource economy, Papua New Guinea struggles to translate resource revenue into development. One of the principal challenges that the country has faced has been in effectively governing the extractive industry sector, which historically has been a source of grievance and conflict for communities living near mining sites. In addition, three of PNG’s mines are among the six worst water polluting mines in the world.
The PNG Resource Governance Coalition joined Publish What You Pay (PWYP) in 2017. Launched in March 2015, its primary purpose is to coordinate and facilitate the participation of civil society in implementing Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. The coalition is currently developing its strategy so that it is aligned to the Publish What You Pay (PWYP) global Vision 20/20 strategy that seeks to strengthen PWYP’s governance standards, and engagement on advocacy initiatives on transparency and accountability on extractive industries.
