Today members of Publish What You Pay US delivered a letter to the new President of the United States, Barack Obama. Our letter was signed by Directors and Presidents of numerous U.S.-based human rights, development, faith-based, and environmental groups who make up our Publish What You Pay national coalition. We asked for two specific things which we believe are crucial to increasing transparency in the extractive industries:

  • Support for the Extractive Industries Transparency Disclosure Act
  • US implementation of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative and increased US support for EITI

We believe these measures can help combat corruption, ensure energy security in the US, alleviate poverty, and combat human rights abuses in the developing world. We very much hope that President Obama will make transparency in the extractive industries a priority in his administration and look forward to working with him during his term of office.
