Mali is currently mining gold, phosphate, kaolin, salt and limestone. Deposits of oil, bauxite, iron ore, manganese, lithium and uranium are suspected. Gold has accounted for 80% of mining activity in Mali during the 2000s and in 2002 briefly became the country’s leading export before cotton and livestock. In 2006 Mali ranked 8th in the world’s top gold producing countries.
