On November 5th 2010, international energy experts, civil society activists and members of the Ukrainian government participated in a conference to discuss the EITI process in Ukraine. The conference’s purpose was to emphasise the importance of the EITI for Ukraine, to demonstrate the experience of countries which implement EITI and to highlight the importance of transparency in the transit of oil and gas through Ukraine and Georgia.
It was argued that Ukraine – rich in natural resources such as gas and minerals – would benefit strongly from EITI. Last July the Ukrainian government declared its commitment to becoming an EITI candidate country. Were Ukraine to become an EITI candidate country, it is crucial that commitment is demonstrated by all elements of of the multi stake holder group: civil society, the government and also companies. It is also vital that more members of civil society become involved in the process.
