Every week, we'll be sharing an online resource that the PWYP team has been exploring. These might be newly launched, newly discovered, or simply old favourites that we want to highlight!
This week, we've been taking a look at Congo Mines

The Carter Center has recently launched a French language website providing detailed information on the industrial mining sector in Katanga, DRC. The portal aims to facilitate access to information that is often scattered and hard to gather.
There are an impressive number of documents on the site. You can browse these by company (the website lists the companies and where they operate, as well as their parent company), by type of document (contract, law, report etc…), by source (government document, CSO, company etc...) or by theme. The theme category is extensive, ranging from fiscal transparency to environmental concerns through to geology. You can also explore the ‘basics’ which will offer you documents on the ‘history of the mining sector’ or ‘mining legislation’, among others. These span the entire value chain of the extractive sector, from contracts and licenses through to revenues and how these are spent.
The site also includes an interactive map. Clicking on an individual mine will tell you which industrial partners have been involved in exploitation, the parent company of the operator (and where that company is listed) as well as information on production levels of the various minerals.
For the moment the website focusses on mining activities in the south Katanga region. However, the Carter Center welcomes materials pertaining to other areas.
