PWYP Mozambique was launched in November 2008 by seven civil society organizations. The national coalition is hosted and coordinated by Friends of the Earth (CIP). Mozambique joined the EITI as an implementing country in 2009, due to the increasing prominence of its extractive sector.

PWYP Mozambique’s 2009-2011 work plan is focused upon providing support to the National EITI Coordinating Committee, as well as to pursue a broad agenda of research and advocacy, to ensure the industry serves as an instrument for sustainable development and benefits the population at large.

Each coalition member is responsible for determining its own agenda, according to its capacities and comparative strengths. For example, CIP has been undertaking research on forests, and on the corporate social responsibility of extractive sector companies. It is also actively engaged in advocacy relating to transparency of the financial flows between companies and government in the sector. Three reports are in preparation, two of which were due for publication in May 2010.
IESE, another PWYP-Mozambique member, focuses on the link between finances generated from the extractive sector, local governance and development. IESE plans to put out four reports in the coming year. This way, Mozambican PWYP members contribute to deepening the debates on economic and social policies in their country and help to push forward EITI implementation, which continues to move slowly at the present time.
