Ecuador’s natural resources include petroleum, fish, shrimp, timber, gold and copper. The country has the third largest proven oil reserves in South America and is South America’s fifth largest oil producer. Ecuador re-joined OPEC in 2007, after having left in 2002. From 2000-2005 oil revenues accounted for a quarter of the government’s total fiscal revenue and half of its export earnings. The state-run oil company Petroecuador controls most of the crude oil production. Major foreign owned companies operating in the country include Repsol and Eni.
